Begin your adventure early in the morning with a pickup from your residence in Kigali. Embark on a scenic 2 to 3-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in Rwanda's Northern Province.
Upon arrival at the park headquarters, receive a short briefing from the park rangers before heading into the forest. Accompanied by an experienced ranger guide, begin your golden monkey trekking experience. As you hike through the bamboo and rainforest-covered slopes, enjoy stunning views of the Virunga mountains and possibly spot various bird species along the way.
Golden monkey tracking typically takes between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the movement of the monkeys. These unique primates are usually found near the park’s edge in bamboo forests. Once located, have the rare opportunity to spend one hour observing their playful behavior leaping from tree to tree and interacting with their surroundings. Although they are fast-moving and a bit tricky to photograph, the experience is both exciting and memorable.
After the trek, enjoy a packed lunch in the heart of the forest, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the bamboo and rainforest environment.
In the afternoon, choose to visit a local cultural center for an optional cultural experience. Learn about the traditional process of making local banana beer. Join community members in squeezing juice from bananas, taste fresh banana juice, and discover how sorghum flour is used in the fermentation process. If you wish, enjoy a glass of the locally brewed beer. Other optional activities at the center include basket weaving a skill that supports local families and helps preserve cultural heritage.
